PHIL MEEYUP RECYCLING ADVENTURES

THE CHALLENGE

Keep Columbus Beautiful needed educational materials that made recycling exciting and accessible for children. Traditional environmental education often feels like homework to young audiences, creating a significant barrier to building lifelong sustainable habits. The challenge was creating content that kids would actually want to engage with — stories with vibrant, relatable characters and engaging visual narratives that could compete with popular children's entertainment while teaching proper recycling practices for common household items and demonstrating the environmental impact of waste. The materials needed to transform recycling education from a chore into something children would actively seek out and remember.

THE OBJECTIVE

Design compelling children's literature that seamlessly integrates engaging storytelling with educational content, creating visual narratives that make recycling education entertaining and memorable for young readers.

THE APPROACH

Hunter Marketing developed six illustrated children's books that brought environmental education to life through vibrant visual storytelling and character-driven narratives. The design process began with creating diverse, relatable characters and adorable animal companions that children could connect with emotionally. Each story was crafted around engaging adventures that naturally incorporated recycling lessons, allowing the educational content to emerge organically from the narrative rather than feeling forced or preachy.

The visual design emphasized bright, inclusive illustrations that reflected the diversity of Columbus children while making recycling processes clear and accessible. Bold, colorful artwork captured attention on every page, while consistent character design and visual language across all six books created a cohesive series that encouraged continued reading. The design successfully balanced entertainment value with educational objectives, ensuring that complex environmental concepts became digestible and memorable through compelling visual storytelling.
